The 2011 MakeIT! Furniture Awards
The 2011 MakeIT! Furniture Awards will be held at the National School of Furniture in Oxford on 13 June, celebrating the achievements of students from across the country in creating innovative, exciting and sustainable designs.
The MakeIT! Furniture programme aims to encourage students to consider a career in the furniture industry, and to heighten awareness of the wide range of career opportunities it offers.
The competition was judged by a panel of experts from Proskills and the furniture industry, who met in Nottingham on 7 April to judge the entries and select the first ever finalists of the MakeIT! Furniture competition. The programme had a particular emphasis on sustainability, with all students encouraged to consider where the wood should come from, and the wider environmental implications. This approach is designed to equip students with the skills they will need to build a long-term career in the furniture industry.
The furniture industry is currently suffering from a skills shortage, so attracting young people is vital to its future. The MakeIT! Furniture programme offers real scope for creativity, encouraging students to express their ideas, while also helping them engage with business. Closer links between schools and industry will help ensure that students are developing skills relevant to the working world, a prime motivation behind the MakeIT! Furniture programme.
Clear your calendar and join us in celebrating the achievements of the furniture designers of tomorrow. For more information on the MakeIT! Furniture programme, and how you can get involved, contact The MakeIT! Furniture Team at Proskills on 01235 432018 or makeitfurniture@proskills.co.uk
